Non-communicable Diseases: A Growing Concern As the world is moving towards an age of advancement and technological increase, the same wave seems to be engulfing our lives with non-communicable diseases (NCDs), otherwise known as chronic diseases. These are diseases that are not transferred from one person to another and have a slow onset. NCDs are one of the biggest challenges in today's world, affecting millions of people worldwide, and have become a growing concern. The primary cause of NCDs is the change in lifestyle and diet, which increases the risk factors like obesity, tobacco use, excessive alcohol consumption, high blood pressure, and high cholesterol levels. These risk factors lead to chronic disease conditions such as diabetes, cancer, cardiovascular diseases (CVD), chronic respiratory diseases, and mental health. The global epidemic of NCDs is visible in both developed and developing countries alike, with developing countries increasingly facing the problem in recent years. These countries are struggling with inadequate resources, limited policies, and strategies to deal with the problem, making NCDs more burdensome for the economies of these countries. To tackle the challenge of NCDs, the world has come together several times to agree on measures that would contribute to the prevention and control of NCDs. Governments have taken necessary steps to raise awareness, promote healthy lifestyles, control tobacco and alcohol consumption, and promote vaccination. The WHO (World Health Organization) has launched multiple campaigns to spread awareness among individuals, governments, and medical professionals about the ill effects of NCDs and possible prevention measures. However, there is still a long way to go. Early diagnosis, effective treatment, and affordable medicines should be made accessible to all, regardless of their economic status, geographic location, or ethnicity. The cost of preventive care and treatment should not be a drawback for individuals with NCDs. In conclusion, NCDs have become a growing concern worldwide, and their prevention and control should be accorded priority by all stakeholders. Creating awareness among individuals, promoting healthy lifestyles, providing affordable and accessible preventive care, and treatment can help in mitigating the impact of NCDs in society. Let's work together to ensure that the upcoming generations live a healthy and disease-free life!
